In 1899, Felix Hoffmann, who worked for Bayer, rediscovered French chemist Charles Gerhardt’s formula for aspirin. Hoffmann tested the formula on his father, who was suffering with arthritis. Yielding good results, Hoffmann convinced Bayer to market the new wonder drug. Aspirin was patented on February 27, 1900.
