The Technology Partnership That Created a Positive Impact for Pedestrian Safety

U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and City of Boston Partnership Reduces Pedestrian Fatalities, the FLC’s latest collaboration success video, is officially released! Starring USDOT’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe) and the City of Boston, the video explores the makings of a successful research and technology partnership designed to reduce pedestrian fatalities.

Through Volpe’s truck side-guard technology and Boston’s eagerness to test the technology on several fleets of public works trucks since 2013, bicyclists and pedestrians have been protected in collisions citywide. Since adopting the Volpe technology, Boston issued the nation’s first mandatory side-guard ordinance for public and private truck fleets—which reached 230 trucks in the first year.

This award-winning partnership is an excellent example of the positive impact federal labs and state and local government entities have on society when they work together for the common good.

The FLC is pleased to present the Volpe and Boston partnership video, and encourages you to share this outstanding example of technology transfer with your partners and colleagues.
