RFT image

Laboratory: U.S. Forest Service (FS) - Forest Products Laboratory (FPL)

Technology: Organic Aerogels for Oil-Spill Cleanup

Opportunity: FPL is seeking interested industry collaborators or licensees to commercialize the technology.

Details: Currently owned by the USDA-FS and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), the technology consists of highly porous, lightweight, sustainable organosilane-coated aerogels with ultra-low densities and superior material properties and methods for preparing them.

Benefits: The aerogels are developed to have a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surface, enabling them to have an extremely high affinity for oils and/or organic solvents.

Potential Applications: FPL’s aerogels are environmentally friendly and perfect for use in in the cleanup of oil spills.
