Dept. of Defense

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division has created a Disruptive Technologies Laboratory and charged it with generating ideas and solutions for the fleet and taking them from concept to reality. One project was to conceptualize, design and fabricate the largest DoD 3D printed object yet. The Optionally Manned Technology Demonstrator is a 30-foot, full-scale hull with a wireless power transfer capability for energizing the propeller.  The entire project was completed in four weeks with the help of many Navy engineers and the Additive Manufacturing team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The inset shows Carderock personnel experimenting with a scaled prototype.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division is a geographically distributed command with headquarters in West Bethesda, Md., and seven detachments. Its mission is to provide full-spectrum research and development, test and evaluation, analyses, acquisition, and fleet support for the Navy’s ships, ship systems and associated logistics systems, and to provide support to the maritime industry.
