NETL Creates Better Sensors for Harsh Environments

NETL Creates Better Sensors for Harsh Environments

Agency:
Dept. of Energy

National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) researchers use lasers, such as the 100-watt CO2 laser shown here, to make better sensors. Use of these sensors, which work efficiently inside the harsh environments of power generation systems, can improve controls for power plants, cut costs for power producers, curtail CO2 emissions, reduce power outages, and lower bills for customers.

NETL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory that produces technological solutions to America’s energy challenges. With research sites in Albany, Ore.; Morgantown, W.Va.; and Pittsburgh, Pa., the laboratory develops tools and processes to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy.  NETL’s mission is to discover, integrate, and mature technology solutions to enhance the nation’s energy foundation and protect the environment for future generations.
