ECBC’s Layered Sensing Initiative

ECBC’s Layered Sensing Initiative

Agency:
Dept. of Defense

The Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) is executing a Layered Sensing Initiative (LSI) to allow for more in-depth and accurate detection results using networked, fixed, and mobile sensors. Conventional detectors are manpower-intensive, with significant delays in detection time and processing, whereas LSI can provide real-time agent detection at numerous overlapping sensing points. This approach may provide a leap-ahead improvement in the ability to detect chemical and biological agents, and transmit all data to a central hub for communication and integration.

ECBC is the Army’s principal research and development center for chemical and biological defense technology, engineering, and field operations. The Center has achieved international recognition for major technological advances for the warfighter and national defense, and has a long and distinguished history of providing the armed forces with quality systems and outstanding customer service. ECBC is a U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) laboratory located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.
