The Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate Aero-Effects Laboratory uses a brand-new supersonic wind tunnel to study the effects of aerodynamic disturbances in the supersonic environment. The facility has an unique capability to develop and implement cutting-edge optical and fluid dynamic flow diagnostic equipment to fully understand the supersonic flow environment. The facility also hosts a water table flow visualization tool, coupling rapid prototyping and aerodynamic flow visualization to accelerate the design and development of novel aero-effects mitigation technologies.

The AFRL Directed Energy Directorate is the Air Force's center of expertise for directed energy and optical technologies. The Directorate, located at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, develops and transitions technologies in four core technical competencies: Lasers Systems, High Power Electromagnetics, Weapons Modeling and Simulation, and Directed Energy and Electro-Optics for Space Superiority.
