CRREL Introduces Students to Engineering Challenges

Cary BMU

The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, N.H., recently hosted a visit from the 7th grade science class from Blue Mountain School in Wells River, Vt.

Through a partnership in education agreement, a CRREL research civil engineer was able to sponsor this onsite class.

During their visit, the students were provided four brief presentations and discussions with researchers, including threatened and endangered plant species work in the greenhouse, projects in the Ice Engineering Facility, Geographic Information Systems, and climate change.

This is the 17th year that 7th and 8th graders from Blue Mountain School have partnered with CRREL for a unique opportunity to be exposed to science and engineering. Prior to each lab visit, the engineer visits the school, provides an overview of the research activity, and assists the students with conducting an ice lab.

Also visiting the classroom soon will be two polar scientists, who will contribute to the science curriculum through a research program, “Adopt a Buoy,” sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
