Atlanta VA Machelle Pardue retinal assessment

Dr. Machelle Pardue is with the Center for Visual and Neurocognitive Rehabilitation at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. In animal studies, her group has shown that exercise can ward off light-induced damage to the retina’s photoreceptor cells. The work has implications for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other conditions that affect the retina.

The Center for Visual and Neurocognitive Rehabilitation aims to enhance veterans’ health by conducting research on the rehabilitation of visual and related neurological impairments. The center’s research spans the basic science of repair mechanisms through the development of creative rehabilitative interventions to improve function and social reintegration. Center investigators come from a variety of backgrounds and collaborate to synergistically develop new approaches and foster the translation of scientific discoveries into clinically relevant treatments.
