One of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, is the Navy's full-spectrum research, development, test and evaluation, engineering, and fleet support center for submarine warfare systems and many other systems associated with the undersea battlespace.

NUWC Division Newport is responsible, cradle to grave, for all aspects of systems under its charter, and is engaged in efforts ranging from participation in fundamental research to the support of evolving operational capabilities in the U.S. Navyfleet. The major thrust of NUWC Division Newport's activities is in applied research and system development.
With headquarters in Rhode Island, NUWC Division Newport operates detachments at West Palm Beach, Florida, and Andros Island in the Bahamas. Remote test facilities are located atSeneca Lake and Fisher's Island in New York, and Dodge Pond, Connecticut.

Vapor explosion weapon
Description:
The apparatus of the present invention utilizes the heat energy of a weapon propulsion system to produce a vapor explosion. It includes an outer shell with a nozzle port and a body being made from a metal. The body surrounds a propulsion device and captures its waste heat to heat metal within the body. An explosive device is embedded in the body and can explode on transmission of a signal whereby the heated metal within the body produces a vapor explosion that significantly enhances the effectiveness and lethality of the weapon. The apparatus also discloses a second metal in the body and a heat shield for further enhancing effectiveness.

Vehicle based vector sensor
Description:
A neutrally buoyant underwater vehicle is provided in which a length of the vehicle is up to one tenth the length of a predetermined acoustic wavelength. The vehicle includes an inertial navigation system with an accelerometer capable of measuring velocity in a multi-axis direction. The navigation system is operationally connected to a hydrophone which measures acoustic energy of the wavelength arriving at the underwater vehicle. A processor gathers the data from the accelerometer and the hydrophone to convert the data into usable units. The operation of the vehicle-based components is similar to a vector sensor for frequencies of 250 Hz or lower.

Velocity reduction method to reduce the flow-induced noise of towed sensor systems
Description:
A system and method are disclosed for reducing flow-induced noise in an underwater towed system. The system includes at least one neutrally buoyant towed array, a tow platform for defining a towed direction of the at least one towed array, a neutrally buoyant tow cable connected to the at least one towed array and the tow platform, and a deploy and retrieve apparatus for deploying and retrieving the tow cable. The deploy and retrieve apparatus is connected to both the tow cable and the tow platform. Deployment of the tow cable from the deploy and retrieve apparatus correspondingly deploys the at least one towed array, and retrieval of the tow cable with the deploy and retrieve apparatus correspondingly retrieves the at least one towed array. The speed of deployment of the tow cable can be varied to decrease the velocity of the towed array relative to the surrounding water thus reducing flow-induced noise.

Wake absorber
Description:
A wake absorber, wherein an aquatic vehicle with a propulsor mounted on the vehicle and operative to propel the vehicle through a water medium, has a wake absorber mounted on the vehicle aft of the propulsor. The wake absorber includes an artificial muscle surface adapted to be impinged upon by a wake created by the propulsor. The wake absorber further includes electrodes mounted on the artificial muscle surface. Pressure of the wake upon the muscle surface exercises a bending force on the surface, which creates energy that is recovered by the electrodes as electrical power that can be digitized. Energy removed from the muscle surface by the electrodes weakens the wake and renders the wake less pronounced visually and acoustically.

Water column sound speed profiling system
Description:
A system and method for determining a sound speed profile of a water column. A free falling sound source is deployed in the water at a known location and time. The sound source transmits acoustic pulses omnidirectionally therefrom at predetermined times after deployment. An acoustic receiver located at a known location detects each acoustic pulse. The time differential between each predetermined time and a time of arrival for each subsequent acoustic pulse is determined. Speed of sound for each portion of the water column is then determined as a function of the time differential, the known locations of sound source deployment and the acoustic receiver, and the known rate of descent of the sound source. The sound source can be constructed from a hydrodynamic body housing a power source, timing electronics, and spark gap electrodes. A bubble, generated by the spark gap electrodes, implodes to create the acoustic pulse.

Water entry system
Description:
A water entry system increases the drag of an underwater vehicle by disrupting the cavity that forms during high-speed transit of the vehicle through the water. A series of inlet ports are positioned in regions of the vehicle where pressure stagnation occurs during transit. Flow passages connect these inlets to outlet ports at regions of lower pressure. Pressure differences cause jets to flow in the respective passages. The jets produce a high flow rate normal to the original cavity boundary. The jets serve to increase drag in at least two manners. In one case, a flow jet normal to the cavity interface broadens the cavity to increase drag and slow the vehicle. In a second case, a jet can cause waves on the cavity interface to break down the stable cavity. As a result, the vehicle surface is wetted, producing skin friction drag and slowing vehicle.

A winglet for mounting on a trailing end of a flexible line to be towed by an underwater vehicle includes an internal collar member for connection to an inside surface of the line at the trailing end thereof, an outer collar member for connection to an outside surface of the line outboard of the internal collar, and connection means for fixing the internal and outer collar members to the line trailing end. Wireless underwater video system
Description:
A Wireless Underwater Video System for obtaining live video/audio data to profile a designated area of an ocean bottom is described. The system includes a video camera enclosed in a water tight housing which produces video and audio signals which are transmitted to a transmitting buoy having a power source, electronics for conditioning the video/audio signals and a position stablizer. The conditioned video signals are then transmitted from the buoy to an observer on a platform over a radio frequency link.

Zero emission fuel system for use with a fuel cell
Description:
A self-contained fuel system for use with a high temperature fuel cell is described to address containment of carbon dioxide evolution. The system utilizes a slurry containing calcium carbide and calcium hydride that is pumped into a water reservoir. The resulting hydrolysis reaction generates acetylene, hydrogen and water-soluble calcium hydroxide. The acetylene and hydrogen are catalytically converted to synthesis gas, which is used by a fuel cell to generate electricity. Carbon dioxide exhaust from the fuel cell is reacted with calcium hydroxide to form a storable solid, calcium carbonate.

Commissioned in 1955 and provided a major upgrade in 1993, the Dodge Pond Acoustic Measurement Facility is the Navy's most modern open-water acoustic test and evaluation site. The facility is centrally located and fully staffed. The Dodge Pond Acoustic Measurement Facility combines an ease of access to all parts of central New England with quiet conditions (ambient noise less than sea state zero) for testing of all types of transducers, arrays, domes, baffles, towed line arrays, and other underwater electro-acoustic devices. The facility supports all types of research and development programs as well as the advancement and application of new underwater acoustic test equipment and methodology. The Dodge Pond Acoustic Measurement Facility consists of a 133.5-square km (33-acre) pond, a 4-square km (1-acre) shore site, and a fully instrumented, environmentally controlled test platform. The platform is located at the end of a 91.4-m (300-ft) long, 13,590-kg (15-ton) weight limited, pontoon supported causeway.

The Narragansett Bay Shallow Water Test Facility (NBSWTF), located just of the coast of Newport, RI, is a Naval Undersea Warfare CEnter (NUWC) test and evaluation facility designed to support research and development work in advanced underwater weapons and weapons systems, weapon launchers, Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and oceanographic equipment. The NBSWTF offers a variety of unique shallow water ranges which allow government, academic and industry partners to expose prototype systems to real environments with a minimum risk of loss. The Seneca Lake Sonar Test Facility at Dresden, NY is a field station of the Naval Sea Systems Command. The Test Facilities and Operations Division of the Engineering Test and Evaluation Department manage the test facility. The facility performs test and evaluation of equipment ranging from single element transducers to complex sonar arrays and systems. This world-class facility is particularly well-known for its massive lift and power capabilities. All sonar and acoustic testing is carried out by a staff of highly qualified acoustic testing professionals on systems and equipment of all sizes. For example, an entire sonar suite (mounted in its sonar compartment) has been tested at Seneca Lake. Seneca Lake is the Navy's primary active instrumented calibration and test facility. Located in a deep freshwater lake and open all year, the facility conducts all types of research and development. It is also world-renowned for its testing and evaluation of major projects requiring relatively deep water with fixed underwater geometry with heavy load-handling and/or electrical power capabilities. There is easy access to the test facility by several major highways. It is within an hour's travel time of either Syracuse or Rochester airports in Western New York State. Large test items or systems may be brought to Seneca Lake from the Atlantic Ocean or the Great Lakes via the New York Barge Canal System. The canal system can accommodate barges up to 12.2-m (40-ft) wide and 61-m (200-ft) long. Two instrumented test barges, the System Measurement Platform (SMP) and Remote Calibration Platform (RCP), are the primary measurement and calibration resources for the facility. The facility can accommodate all other test and calibration equipment deemed necessary, as there is an abundance of power, handling capability, and room to support all special requirements. The SMP is permanently moored near the center of lake approximately 2.6-Km (1.3 miles) from the western shore. Transit to the SMP takes approximately 5 minutes from shore. Two equipment-handling barge and numerous transport boats serve the test facility. The Facility has the potential to handle test fixtures, systems, or equipment weighing up to 200-Mg (200-ton). Such equipment can be lowered on pipe shafting and rotated in azimuth down to water depths of 153-m (502-ft).
