Description

The Experimentation Division (ED), also known as the Battle Command Battle Lab- Gordon (BCBL-G), was chartered in 1994 by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to develop and leverage technologies that would enhance the warfighter's ability to practice the art and science of battle command, to find technical solutions to capability gaps, and to develop command and control (C2) requirements on the battlefield. At the end of 2006, TRADOC directed a major restructuring of all combat development organizations across the Command, and part of that restructuring included alignment of the BCBL-G under the newly formed Signal Center (SIGCEN) Capability Development & Integration Directorate (CDID). As a result of the reorganization efforts, BCBL-G was designated the Experimentation Division (ED) of the CDID. In October 2007, the ED was designated a Federal Laboratory IAW 15 USC 3710.a. (d) and AR 70-57, with authority to participate in the Army Domestic Technology Transfer Program (ADTTP). The ED has used this designation to establish Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and Education Partnership Agreements (EPAs) with industry and academia (respectively) to assess and conduct experimentation of emerging commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions for identified capability gaps, Joint Urgent Operational Needs Statements (JUONS), and other warfighter C2 requirements. Furthermore, the ED will leverage the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) and Partnership Intermediary networks to access a broader range of industry research and development efforts to investigate and fill urgent warfighter gaps, as well as support Future Force concepts and experimentation efforts.

The ED conducts and participates in TRADOC-directed and -sponsored concept development and prototype experiments; performs science and technology evaluations and assessments; executes modeling and simulation projects and tasks for multiple agencies; and performs studies and analyses within its leading- edge telecommunications and advanced computing technology lanes. The ED is located at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and is housed in a state-of-the-art assessment and evaluation facility that supports the following activities/functions: 1) an advanced networking laboratory test bed, 2) a modeling and simulations lab, 3) the Network Service Center- Training (NSC-T), 4) the Battle Lab Collaborative Simulation Environment (BLCSE) Network Operations and Security Center (NOSC), and 5) Future Force experiment exercises. The ED is supported by a team of Army officers, senior enlisted persons, Department of the Army civilians, and defense contractors.

Mission

The mission of the Experimentation Division is to research, analyze, prototype, experiment, and assess the suitability and applicability of products associated with telecommunications, networking, and network operations (NETOPS) for use in a war-fighting environment.
