The 8 x 6 Supersonic Wind Tunnel provides the Nation with a continuous operation facility capable of testing aeronautical systems in an aerodynamic mode (closed-loop) or in a propulsion mode (open-loop with no exhaust scoop). Test speed capability is from Mach 0 to 0.1 and 0.25 to 2.0. The test section is designed with 1-inch wall perforations to allow testing at transonic speeds, as well as subsonic and supersonic speeds. Variable wall porosity up to 6 percent is provided in the test section. The test section is 8 ft. high, 6 ft. wide, and 23 ft. long. Advanced instrumentation, steady state and high speed data systems support acquisition of test data. The facility is operated and controlled by a distributed control system. Test productivity is enhanced using a sequencer to follow a pre-programmed test matrix. Supporting systems include: schlieren shock imaging; sheet lasers; oil flow visualization; pressure sensitive paint (PSP); hydrocarbon and GH2 fuel systems; and high pressure air. A major facility rehabilitation was completed in 1993 and maintenance improvements continue.
