Two-Cycle Engine Exhaust Emissions Separator

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has developed a two-cycle engine exhaust emissions separator that injects compressed engine exhaust into a specially modified vortex tube.

The injection effect causes heavier particles of unconsumed oil to condense and collect where they can be easily recycled or discarded. Bench top work done at the INL labs with modified vortex tubes has effectively demonstrated the ability to separate 95% of the water from a nitrogen gas mixture. Extrapolation of this principle to a two-cycle engine exhaust system is the basis for the technology design.

This new technology has the potential to make any two-cycle engine run cleaner by significantly reducing smog emissions while simultaneously reducing noise emissions. It also promises to be relatively inexpensive to implement.
