Background/History of the Laboratory:
As one of the 48 Science Centers in the Water Discipline
of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Illinois Water
Science Center is an integral part of a Federal agency devoted to data collection, applied science,
scientific
research, and dissemination of information.
USGS Illinois Water Science Center has three offices -
the main Science Center Office in Urbana and two
satellite offices in De Kalb and Mt. Vernon.

Mission of the Laboratory:
The
USGS Illinois Water Science Center provides relevant, unbiased, water-resources information and expertise
needed by others to achieve the best use and management of water resources in Illinois, the Midwest,
and the
United States.
The
USGS Illinois Water Science Center collects data, conducts interpretive water-resources appraisals and
research, and disseminates information in a timely manner. Studies encompass the four following areas:
