Background/History of the Laboratory:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the Nation’s largest earth-science agency and has the principal responsibility within the Federal government for providing hydrologic information and for appraising the Nation's water resources. The water resources of Missouri consist of numerous streams, springs, lakes, and aquifer systems. The USGS Missouri Water Science Center measures streamflow at about 207 stream–gaging stations, water-surface elevation at 17 lakes and reservoirs, annual peak stage and discharge at 39 crest–stage stations, continuous water-level elevation at 8 ground-water wells, continuous water-quality at 20 water-quality stations, and collects periodic water–quality samples at 94 sites. These hydrologic data and other data are used in research and hydrologic studies to describe the quantity, quality, and location of Missouri’s water resources. The collection, analysis, and interpretation of these data is done in cooperation with other Federal, State and local agencies, universities, and research centers.

Mission of the Laboratory:

The mission of the Missouri Water Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey is to provide the hydrologic information and understanding needed for optimum utilization and management of water resources throughout the United States. To accomplish this mission, we:
  • Collect, on a systematic basis, data needed for the continuing determination and evaluation of the quantity, quality, and use of Missouri's water resources.
  • Conduct interpretive appraisals describing the occurrence, availability, and biological characteristics of surface and ground water.
  • Conduct supportive basic and problem-oriented research in hydraulics, hydrology, and related fields of science.
  • Disseminate data and results of investigations and research through reports, maps, computerized information services, and other forms of public releases.
  • Provide scientific and technical assistance in hydrologic fields to other Federal, State, and local agencies.
