Background/History of the Laboratory:

The U.S. Geological Survey currently operates over 200 data collection sites in Colorado for acquiring information on surface-water, ground-water, water-quality, and precipitation. Many of the sites are equipped with satellite telemetry, which provides real-time data via GOES satellites and downlinks, which enables the posting of data to the Web for public dissemination.

Water-resource activities include:
  • Presentation of real-time streamflow, water-quality, ground-water levels data
  • Operation and oversight of an extensive network of water-resource monitoring gages
  • Archive of water-resource information collected for more than 100 years
  • Data collection and investigative studies related to issues of concern to water-management entities and citizens
  • Publishing data and topical reports.
The USGS Colorado Water Science Center headquarters is located in Lakewood. Other offices include the Western Colorado Office in Grand Junction, the Southeast Colorado Office in Pueblo, field offices in Durango, Lakewood, and Meeker, and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Project Office in Commerce City.
