Background/History of the Laboratory:
U.S.
Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), established in 1987, is
responsible for creating and implementing world-class global
deployment and distribution solutions. In 2003, USTRANSCOM
became the Department of Defense's Distribution Process
Owner and the single entity that directs and supervises
execution of the strategic distribution system. USTRANSCOM
also manages supply chain related information technology
systems and has the authority to procure commercial
transportation services. USTRANSCOM's three component
commands -- the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, Scott
AFB, Ill.; the Navy's Military Sealift Command,
Washington, D.C.; and the Army's Military Surface
Deployment and Distribution Command, Scott AFB, Ill. --
provide intermodal transportation across the spectrum of
military operations.
Mission of the Laboratory:
To improve the
global deployability and sustainment of U.S. Armed Forces by
providing the Department of Defense with transportation
engineering, policy guidance, research, and analytical
expertise to support the National Military Strategy.
USTRANSCOM's transformation vision is to change its
orientation from a Command that provides strategic
transportation to a Command that develops and employs
end-to-end (E2E) global coordinated distribution of forces
and materiel.
