Background/History of the Laboratory:
TVA is the nation's largest public power
company, with 33,000 megawatts of dependable generating capacity.
Through 158 locally owned distributors, TVA provides power to nearly 8.5 million residents of the Tennessee
Valley. For more than seven decades, TVA has been improving the quality of life in the Tennessee Valley
through
its threefold mission of providing affordable and reliable power, promoting sustainable economic development,
and acting as a steward of the Valley's natural resources.
Mission of the Laboratory:
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Environmental
Research Center, located in Muscle Shoals, Ala., has a
mission to promote quality in research, development, education, and commercialization of technologies
to
enhance the environment. The Center, with expertise in the fields of agronomy, chemistry, engineering
economics, material science, soil science, and all engineering disciplines, conducts research and develops
state-of-the-art environmental technologies for demonstrating environmentally sensitive agriculture
practices
for preventing or reducing pollution to the air, land, and water; for assessing and remediating wastes
at military
sites; and for converting agriculture, industrial, and municipal wastes and other products to commercially
available commodities.
