Background/History of the Laboratory:
The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been active in the
fight against disease for almost half a century. Established
as the Communicable Disease Center in 1946 in Atlanta, Ga.,
CDC is the agency of the Public Health Service that has led
efforts to prevent such diseases as malaria, polio, smallpox,
toxic shock syndrome, Legionnaires' disease, and more
recently, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and
tuberculosis. CDC's responsibilities as the nation's
prevention agency have expanded over the years and will
continue to evolve as the agency addresses contemporary
threats to health, such as injury, environmental and
occupational hazards, behavioral risks, and chronic diseases.
CDC's work force of almost 6,000 persons includes
scientists, technicians, administrators, and support staff;
representing more than 170 occupations. About half of these
employees are located at agency headquarters and at other
locations in Atlanta. The remainder are assigned to field
stations, quarantine offices, state and local health
departments, and other countries. Employees of CDC work
closely with staff of other federal agencies; state and local
health departments; educational institutions; philanthropic
foundations; international groups; and professional,
voluntary, and community organizations to help translate new
health promotion and disease prevention techniques into
improved health for all people.
Mission of the Laboratory:
CDC has a vision
for the 21st century: Healthy people in a healthy world. The
mission of the CDC is to promote health and quality of life
by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and
disability. As the nation's prevention agency, CDC
accomplishes its mission by working with partners throughout
the nation and the world to monitor health; detect and
investigate health problems; conduct research to enhance
prevention; develop and advocate sound public health
policies; implement prevention strategies; promote healthy
behaviors; and foster safe and healthful
environments.
