Background/History of the Laboratory:

The Central Regional Office was established on July 15, 1996, in Columbia, Mo. and moved to the Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo. in late June 1997. The Region encompasses the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. These states include widely varying geographical areas such as coastal wetlands, mountains, short- and tall-grass prairies, arid and semi-arid deserts and temperate and boreal forests, all of which contribute to the ecological complexity of the region.

Mission of the Laboratory:

The Central Regional Office of the Regional Executive for Biology has several major areas of responsibility:
  • Serve as a coordinating point for integrating science activities to meet the needs of the natural resources agencies.
  • Build partnerships with natural resource managers representing federal, state and private sector stakeholders.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing priority information/science needs of Department of the Interior land and natural resources management agencies.
  • Administer the research programs and operational activities of the Science Centers and Field Stations assigned to the Central Region.
