Background/History of the Laboratory:
Sandia National Laboratories is a multiprogram
engineering and scientific facility operated for the Department of
Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. Major Laboratory facilities are located in Albuquerque,
N.Mex.
and Livermore, Calif. Our 3,500 technical staff members, including 450 at the California site, are recruited
from all
disciplines of engineering and the physical sciences. Sandia/California is committed to collaborative
research and
development with industry and universities, resulting in new and enhanced technologies that have both
commercial and national security benefits. Sandia/California develops weapons systems and technology
that
support our nation's nuclear deterrence policy. Some of the nation's greatest challenges are solved
by our
programs.
Mission of the Laboratory:
The Laboratories' principal missions revolve
around national security in the broadest sense of military, energy,
and economic competitiveness. Our primary emphasis is on nuclear weapons research and development. In
the mid-1970s, we broadened our charter in support of the country's need to develop and expand our energy
supply and improve the efficiency of its utilization. In the late 1980s, we again diversified our program,
this time
training our technical resources - people, technologies, and facilities - on the competitive challenges
of the
private sector.
