Background/History of the Laboratory:

The Atomic Energy Commission opened the Nevada Operations Office at 2753 South Highland Drive in Las Vegas, Nev., in March 1962. After a period of 35 years, May 1997, the doors on Highland Drive closed and the Nevada Operations Office relocated to the Nevada Support Facility. Most of the work performed by our federal employees is project management in the scientific and engineering fields. Supporting these scientific and engineering functions are a variety of technical and administrative positions. The Nevada Operations Office was created and located in Las Vegas, Nev., in 1962, to oversee and take responsibility for the operations and programs of the Nevada Test Site. Our current primary mission is to preserve the nation's capability to resume testing and maintain the strategic nuclear stockpile. The Nevada Test Site also serves the nation as a proving ground for alternative energy research and Department of Defense projects that require the isolation, complex infrastructure, and technical expertise we can provide. As a National Environmental Research park, the Nevada Test Site is home to important environmental activities including technology development, clean up and remediation of contaminated environments, and waste management. The Test Site is a unique outdoor laboratory where federal agencies and private industry conduct large-scale open-air experiments with hazardous and toxic chemicals and test remediation and emergency response techniques.

Mission of the Laboratory:

Nevada Site Office current missions are:

  • National Security - Support the Stockpile Stewardship Program through subcritical and other weapons physics experiments, nuclear test readiness, emergency management, training and demonstration for defense systems, advanced high hazard operations, and other national security experimental programs;
  • Environmental Management - Support environmental restoration, groundwater characterization, and low-   level radioactive waste management;
  • Stewardship of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) - Manage the land and facilities at the NTS as a unique and valuable national resource;
  • Technology Diversification and Economic Diversification - Support traditional and nontraditional departmental programs and commercial activities that are compatible with the Stockpile Stewardship Program.
