Background/History of the Laboratory:

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division, Newport is located on the southeastern coast of New England. Its principal site is located in Newport, R.I., and it has facilities in West Palm Beach, Fla., and on Andros Island in the Bahamas. The Division was formed in January 1992 as part of the newly created Naval Undersea Warfare Center. However, its impressive history traces back to 1869, when the Naval Torpedo Station was established in Newport, R.I., and to the Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London, Conn., which was established during World War II to conduct research on the application of underwater sound energy. The full time permanent workforce at NUWC Division Newport numbers 2600 civilian personnel. Approximately three-quarters of the workforce are employed in scientific or engineering positions. The Division's annual budget totals over $900 million. Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport's unique facilities and expertise can be made available to the private and public sectors through a variety of mechanisms, including Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and Work for Private Party Agreements under 10 USC 2539b and 10 USC 2563.

Mission of the Laboratory:

NUWC Division Newport's mission is to provide the technical foundation which enables the conceptualization, research, development, fielding, modernization and maintenance of systems that ensure the undersea superiority of the U.S. Navy Although all of the Division's expertise and facilities are dedicated to undersea warfare related research and development, its technologies hold exciting potential for applications within the private sector (e.g., oceanographic and environmental research, navigational aids, and satellite communications).
