Background/History of the Laboratory:

The US Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC), a field operating agency of the Army Chief of Staff, oversees and coordinates both the hardware development and fielding of space, strategic and theater missile defense systems. Its strategic defense arm serves as the focal point for strategic and missile defense technology base development in support of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. The majority of USASMDC's authorized military and civilian employees are located at its Huntsville, Ala. facility. In addition, USASMDC personnel are also based at its Arlington, Va. headquarters; at Army Space Command, Colorado Springs, Colo.; U.S. Army Kwajalein Missile Range, Republic of the Marshall Islands; White Sands Missile Range, N.Mex.; and at several field offices and operational Defense Satellite Communications System facilities around the world.

Mission of the Laboratory:

As the Army Service Component to USSTRATCOM, SMDC/ARSTRAT conducts space operations and provides planning, integration, control and coordination of Army forces and capabilities in support of USSTRATCOM missions; serves as proponent for space and ground-based midcourse defense and as Army operational integrator for global missile defense; conducts mission related research, development, and acquisition in support of Army Title 10 responsibilities and serves as the focal point for desired characteristics and capabilities in support of USSTRATCOM missions.
