Background/History of the Laboratory:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), founded in 1901 as the National Bureau of Standards, was renamed in 1988 and directed specifically to assist industry in the development of technology needed to improve product quality, to modernize manufacturing processes, to ensure product reliability and to facilitate rapid commercialization of products based on new scientific discoveries. This explicit mission builds on a long-standing agency responsibility to both assist industry and develop, maintain, and retain custody of the national standards of measurement. As a non- regulatory agency of the Commerce Department, NIST helps U.S. industry strengthen its competitiveness, advances science and engineering, and improves public health, safety, and the environment. Several NIST programs are designed to spur innovation and accelerate the adoption of new ideas and technology by U.S. companies. For example, the Advanced Technology Program provides seed money to help U.S. businesses conduct research on precompetitive, generic technologies with high commercial potential. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, managed by NIST in cooperation with the private sector, is directed at encouraging industry to improve quality. Established by Congress in 1987, the award recognizes U.S. companies that excel in quality achievement and total quality management.

Mission of the Laboratory:

To promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.
