Rhode Island
In 2007, Rhode Island-based federal agencies and laboratories received a federal R&D investment of $628 million. They leveraged that investment via their technology transfer efforts to address societal needs, promote economic development and growth, and enhance U.S. competitiveness. From defense to life sciences to energy to agriculture, Rhode Island-based federal agencies and labs are meeting the technology transfer mission envisioned by Congress.

Technology Transfer Success Stories
Navy Center Develops Next Generation of Scientists
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport is using a unique robotics program to develop the next generation of scientists and engineers to fill a critical future Navy-wide need. Over the past few years, NUWC Division Newport has played a role in a variety of educational initiatives, all of which have one purpose-to expose children to the wonders of science and engineering.
In 2006, NUWC Division Newport instituted the Undersea Technology Apprentice Program (UTAP) as a way to provide local students with a meaningful summer internship opportunity. Forty students from Rhode Island area schools participate in the four-week program, during which they are exposed to applications of engineering and teamwork-one of the most important aspects of the workplace experience.
