Oklahoma
In 2007, Oklahoma-based federal agencies and laboratories received a federal R&D investment of $253 million. They leveraged that investment via their technology transfer efforts to address societal needs, promote economic development and growth, and enhance U.S. competitiveness. From defense to life sciences to energy to agriculture, Oklahoma-based federal agencies and labs are meeting the technology transfer mission envisioned by Congress.

Technology Transfer Success Stories
USDA Researchers Develop Forage-based Grazing System
One of the problems with forage-based grazing systems in the southern Great Plains is the lack of available forage during the cool season in May and June. Researchers at the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) tested a cool-season annual legume, grasspea, to fill this spring forage deficit period. Sold under the name AC-Greenfix, grasspea has excellent drought tolerance and, because it is a legume, fixes nitrogen in the soil. In fact, it can add as much as 100-200 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Most importantly, grasspea is excellent forage for cattle and has high protein content. Research has demonstrated its nitrogen additive capabilities and forage value, which shows that grasspea is growing in popularity among grazing operations. Seed has been sold to operations in multiple states, as well as Canada and France.
