Louisiana

In 2007, Louisiana-based federal agencies and laboratories received a federal R&D investment of $419 million. They leveraged that investment via their technology transfer efforts to address societal needs, promote economic development and growth, and enhance U.S. competitiveness. From defense to life sciences to energy to agriculture, Louisiana-based federal agencies and labs are meeting the technology transfer mission envisioned by Congress.

Technology Transfer Success Stories

Louisiana Benefits from Stennis Space Center
Louisiana businesses, academia, and government entities have benefited over the years from successful partnerships with NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC) in Mississippi. These stakeholders work in harmony with Mississippi interests to leverage the assets of NASA and companies that support the NASA mission, as well as the many other federal labs at SSC. Nearly 30% of the more than 5200 employees at SSC's "Federal City" are residents of Louisiana, providing the state with a sizable return on its investment. In 2008, SSC's direct economic impact (within a 50-mile radius) was estimated to be $691 million.

The Louisiana Technology Transfer Office (LTTO) is designed to foster business relationships between Louisiana industry and federal laboratories. This mission is accomplished through the Louisiana Business and Technology Center's (LBTC) statewide activities and offices located on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and at SSC.

Many Louisiana-based technology companies have offices at SSC to support their contract work with NASA or other federal labs. The LTTO has full-time staff at SSC, and they work closely with entities such as NASA, the U.S. Navy, the Office of Higher Learning, and the Mississippi Enterprise for Technology to ensure that these companies have the support-including the SBIR and NASA Dual Use programs-they need to grow and succeed.
