Description

  • SBIR is a three phase federally funded, competitive award process for technological development of agency driven interest provided in a NIST solicitation.>

    Includes feasibility, demonstration, and commercialization aspects.

Features/Characteristics

  • The NIST SBIR Program awards contracts as opposed to grants as the funding agreement type for its awards. Small businesses awarded NIST SBIR funds perform R&D in accordance with FAR rules and under the supervision of a NIST technical representative that monitors the progress of the R&D.

    Phase 1 Awards: Feasibility study, must not exceed $75,000, including subcontract, indirect cost, and fee. Duration of project must not exceed 6 months.>
    Phase II Awards: Phase I award winners are eligible for Phase II Awards worth up to $300,000 for a 24 month period. This phase is used for prototype development.
    Phase III: Is devoted to commercialization and does not involve SBIR funding.

I.P. and Resource Commitment

  • IP rights belong to the small business participant while the government retains a right to a non-exclusive royalty free license to any IP results.
